Carve out time to disconnect

I don’t know about you, but I have personally been really struggling recently with the constant access to information technology and the addictive nature of that access. I find that my phone is the first thing I reach for in the morning, not only to turn off my alarm clock, but also for a quick scroll. Catching up on emails tends to take precedent to catching up on a good book. I barely give my brain a second to remember a fact or a detail on its own without reaching to look it up. And in quiet moments where I should be content with waiting or silence (read: at a red light or waiting to check out at the grocery store), my hands itch to refresh a news page instead of being at peace in the moment.

In a world that never stops scrolling, buzzing, and updating, it’s easy to forget what it feels like to truly disconnect. At Tradewinds Fitness, we believe that wellness goes beyond physical strength. It’s also about creating space for mental clarity, presence, and balance. That’s why unplugging from technology and social media, even for a short time, can be one of the most powerful things you do for your health.

When you step away from screens, you give your mind a chance to reset. Constant notifications and endless content can quietly drain your energy and focus, leaving you feeling scattered rather than refreshed. By unplugging, you create room to be fully present in your workouts, in your breathing, in your surroundings, and in your body.

Movement becomes more meaningful when it’s not interrupted by texts or tracked for likes. Whether you’re lifting, stretching, or jumping through a class, being fully engaged in the workout helps you connect more deeply with your body and get more out of every session.

Unplugging also strengthens your connection to the people and environment around you. A smile from a fellow gym member, the rhythm of music in the studio, or even a quiet moment between sets becomes more noticeable and more valuable when you’re not distracted by technology.

We encourage you to carve out small pockets of time each week to disconnect. Leave your phone in your bag, silence the notifications, and give yourself permission to be fully present in your workouts. Take a beach walk without (gasp!!) your phone. Designate one evening a week as a fully tech-free night as a family and see what happens. You might be surprised at how much lighter, calmer, and more energized you feel.

Because sometimes, the best way to recharge…? is to simply unplug.

Talk with a coach and let’s map out the right plan for you.
