Michaela has been an athlete at Tradewinds since April 2017 and joined our coaching team in February 2018. By day she’s a boss, TCOBing (taking care of business), and by night (and some mornings) she’s a fearless and devoted athlete, coach and friend to all at TW. She is fully committed to her total wellness, but if you know her then you know that also includes amazing taste in food and drinks. She’s the go to for a hot restaurant recommendation or a rec. for your next pair of sneakers, and a coach who helps push you outside your comfort zone to discover your true potential. Please join us today to celebrate all things Michaela.

TW – Where are you originally from? Have you lived in other places?
Michaela –  I am originally from southern RI and my mom and a lot of my family still live there.  I came to Boston for college and basically never left.  I lived in Boston and Jamaica Plain for 10 years before I moved to Saugus for a beat before we bought our house in Revere.

TW – What is one of your first memories as a Coach at TW?
Michaela –  In once of my classes, an athlete stepped off the bike wrong and broke her ankle.  Obviously I felt horrible about that.  To compound it, Andy and Mary were across the Globe in Thailand and I was sure I was going to be fired when they got back!

TW – If you could program your dream WOD, what would it be?
Michaela –  AMRAP 30: 5 hang cleans, 5 front squats, 5 shoulder to overhead and 5 burpees between each movement.  Let’s go!

TW – What is your proudest accomplishment since joining TW?
Michaela –  Being able to do pull-ups!  When I first started, I used to watch all the girls who could do pull-ups and was SO IMPRESSED and in awe.  I never thought I’d be able to do an unassisted pull-up.  It took a load of hard work, but I’m so proud of being able to do that movement.

TW – What is your favorite song/type of music you like to workout to?
Michaela –  Punk and hard rock.

TW – How has TW helped you in your everyday life?
Michaela –  Being an athlete and a coach at TW has made me a much more confident person.  My full-time job is incredibly stressful, but I am able to better navigate difficult issues because I feel good about myself.  When I workout consistently, I am generally happier, and that translates to every aspect of my life.

TW – What is your favorite thing to do outside of the gym?
Michaela –  I’m pretty sure I don’t do anything outside the gym except work, eat, and sleep! However, my favorite things to do are to hang out with my family and friends and my dog, try new restaurants, cook with new recipes, and spend time outside and on our boat in the summer.

TW – What is one major thing you have learned as a coach?
Michaela –  When I first started coaching, I remember vividly being terrified to stand up in front of a class and teach complex movements that I either 1) could not do and/or 2) was not proficient in.  Imposter syndrome is a real thing!  When it finally clicked that I didn’t need to be great at everything, as long as I could be a great coach at everything, I became a much better coach.  Thanks, Andy, for beating that into my head!

Also, in case you missed it last month during our Tea Tuesday Series, here are some additional fun facts about Coach Michaela:

  • I met The Rock once. It was the best day of my life. Side note, I am also a natural brunette
  • My husband and I have the same birthday. It was mine first, though!
  • I used to train MMA and fought in an exhibition for the Wounded Warrior Project.
  • When I was 3, I bit through my tongue running through the kitchen and smashing into the dishwasher. I still have a nub!
  • I’ve seen the Dropkick Murphys in concert about 50 times.
  • I love to bake!

Michaela, thank you for always striving to be your best shelf so that you can help motivate, encourage and coach others to grow to be their best selves too! Your courage and strength continue to inspire everyone you work with, and we’re so lucky and blessed to have you a part of our TW family. Thank you!
