There’s something about September that makes everything feel like it needs a reset.
New schedules. New routines. New school years. New activities. New goals.
And while I love the feeling of a fresh start, I also think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves this time of year to suddenly have it all together.
The perfectly organized calendar. The meal prep. The early mornings. The consistent workouts. The healthy dinners. The bedtime routine.
But real life doesn’t usually work that way.
Fall is a transition and transitions take time.
This year, that feels especially true in our house because my son is starting kindergarten.
We’ve spent the summer enjoying slower mornings, later nights, spontaneous plans and a pretty relaxed schedule. And now, suddenly, we’re talking about school drop-offs, backpacks, lunches, earlier bedtimes and getting out the door on time.
As exciting as it is, it’s also a little emotional. And if I’m being honest, I know it’s going to take some time for all of us to find our rhythm.
And that got me thinking about how often we do the same thing with our health and fitness.
We go from a relaxed summer schedule straight into September and decide, “Okay. Time to get serious.”
We tell ourselves we’re going to work out five days a week, eat perfectly, drink all the water, get to bed early and never miss a workout.
And then life happens.
You have a busy morning. Your kid gets sick. Work runs late. You’re exhausted. You miss a workout.
And suddenly, it’s easy to think, “Well, I blew it. I’ll start again Monday.”
But you didn’t blow it. You’re just living your life.
The goal isn’t to be perfect. The goal is to keep moving forward.
Maybe your workouts look a little different while you settle into a new schedule. Maybe you make it to three classes instead of four. Maybe dinner is simple instead of perfectly planned. Maybe you have a week where you’re just doing your best to keep the basics in place.
That still counts.
The healthy habits you built over the summer don’t disappear just because your routine changes. Your progress doesn’t disappear because you missed a workout. And you certainly don’t need to wait until everything feels settled to take care of yourself.
Instead of an all-or-nothing approach this fall, try asking yourself:
What can I realistically do today that will help me feel better tomorrow?
Maybe it’s getting your workout in. Maybe it’s going for a walk. Maybe it’s drinking more water. Maybe it’s getting to bed a little earlier. Maybe it’s simply showing up when you don’t feel particularly motivated.
Small things, done consistently, add up.
So as we head into a new season, give yourself a little grace.
Set goals. Get back into a routine. Make healthy choices. Keep showing up.
But don’t expect yourself to go from summer mode to perfectly structured fall mode overnight.
We’re all figuring out new schedules, new routines and new seasons of life.
Around here, we’re doing the same thing, one school morning, one workout, one healthy choice and one day at a time.
You don’t need to start over this fall. You just need to keep going.
