June 2019 Athlete of the Month

Katy Galow is our Fit Fam Athlete of the Month for June! Katy recently joined Tradewinds just over two months ago and is already a fan favorite!  She’s been consistently attending group classes 3-4 days a week and is participating in our 31-Day Fitness & Nutrition Challenge. Congratulations Katy, we’re all so proud of how much you’ve accomplished already and can’t wait to see what happens next!

Athlete Interview:

CFT: Where are you from?

Katy: Austin, Texas

CFT: How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Katy: Just over 2 months

CFT: What motivated you to try CrossFit?

Katy: The hubs aka Chad

CFT: What group class do you usually attend?

Katy: 12pm class

CFT: Did you have a fitness background prior to starting CrossFit?

Katy: I was a college athlete way back in the day. When I’m not working, I do kickboxing at least 3 to 4 times a week. When I am working, it depends on the job I can go months with nothing, but sometimes my job is super active. I ended my last show having to climb a mountain everyday in -3 degree weather.

CFT: If you could program your dream WOD, what would it be?

Katy: Oh gosh! Definitely no running… I really like the body weight ones. Chelsea and Cindy are still some of my favorites. It would be something like a ladder workout with air squats, sit-ups, pull ups.

CFT: What is your proudest accomplishment since joining Tradewinds?

Katy: Well, when I first came in, I couldn’t even hang onto the bar. Now when I’m goofing around and trying to do a strict pull up, my body moves up .001mm, but it moves up! I never thought that would happen.

CFT: How has CFT helped you in your everyday life?

Katy: I definitely have more energy. I always joke in class that I don’t get winded up the stairs now carrying my groceries, but it’s true.  I also try to carry everything in one load, as we all do, so truly it’s a big effort to get them up the stairs and I can do it while breathing now.

CFT: What do you like to do outside of the gym?

Katy: I love to try new restaurants and go to escape rooms. The hubs and I  go to sporting events a lot as well. And I’m not going to lie, a lazy day on the couch with bad TV or Food Network is sometimes just the best.  I’m also involved with Best Buddies and love everything about the program.

CFT: What is your favorite song to workout to?

Katy: Depends on the day, but lately I’ve been into Lizzo and Janelle Monae lately

CFT: What’s one thing you’d tell someone who is curious about trying CrossFit but not sure if they could do it?

Katy: Don’t be intimated. You can do more than what you think and just have fun with it.

I’ve really loved my short experience so far. I still feel like a newbie, but enjoy learning and challenging myself everyday. Not only has CrossFit help me get back into adequate shape (I wouldn’t say good or great yet), but also it’s allowed me to meet more people in the Winthrop community, which I’ve really enjoyed. The other gyms I’ve been to are wonderful, but do not have the strong sense of community like Tradewinds does.
