Our March 2019 Tradewinds Athlete of the Month goes out to Jack.
Jack has not only been an athlete at CrossFit Tradewinds since day one, he was our very first athlete ever. Jack has been very involved at Tradewinds over the years, including participating in many of our internal competitions and attending nearly all of our events. You can also seem him passing out “no reps” as a judge in many of our competitions. But in all seriousness, Jack, it’s been a long time coming, but you’ve earned this. Congrats!
CFT: Where are you from?
Jack: Winthrop!
CFT: How long have you been doing CrossFit?
Jack: 5 Years
CFT: What motivated you to try CrossFit?
Jack: Back in 2014 I wanted to get ready for a Tough Mudder and my sister mentioned a Crossfit Box was opening up in town. We both joined on day one and my plan was to just sign up until the Tough Mudder was over. I was hooked immediately and I still joke with people to this day that I was only going to sign up for three months!
CFT: What group class do you usually attend?
Jack: I am usually at the 6pm most days and 12pm on Tuesdays. Thursday is almost always my rest day….
CFT: Did you have a fitness background prior to starting CrossFit?
Jack: I had a sports background, I grew up on skates playing Hockey since I was 3 and learned to ski around the same time. I stuck with Hockey and got into Tennis in High School and I was a member of two State Championship Tennis teams in College. I continued skiing and playing pickup Hockey after college but in the years leading up to me finding Crossfit I was honestly not as active as I should have been.
CFT: If you could program your dream WOD, what would it be?
Jack: I love long workouts with the barbell. I would say something over 20min long with a Deadlift and Power Clean. You can throw some dubs in there as well as I like to practice them!
CFT: What is your proudest accomplishment since joining Tradewinds?
Jack: I actually have three tied! 1) Getting Double Unders. They took me FOREVER. 2) Getting my first Ring Muscle Up 3) This was just recently but going a whole mat in a handstand walk!
CFT: How has CFT helped you in your everyday life?
Jack: I know I may sound old…but…my Cholesterol level has dropped significantly since starting CrossFit. I also have much more energy to keep up with my 6 year old Daughter!
CFT: What do you like to do outside of the gym?
Jack: Would not leaving Winthrop count?? lol….Outside of the gym I like just hanging out with my friends and family and hosting at Jack’s Bar! I also am a big fan of cruises having been on 6 now and seeing two Patriots Super Bowl wins while in the middle of the Caribbean! Most nights I am also a big PC game nerd. I love playing strategy games or MMO’s (Massively Multiplayer Games).
CFT: What is your favorite song to workout to?
Jack: I do not really have one. I listen to everything from Rock to Pop to Country (GASP)!
CFT: What’s one thing you’d tell someone who is curious about trying CrossFit but not sure if they could do it?
Jack: I am not a person who liked going to the gym. I could never stick to a routine and there was no accountability. If this sounds like you then just come in and give it a try. The workouts are fun and the atmosphere and camaraderie is what keeps me coming back.
Jack: A big part of my life revolves around CFT. I enjoy coming in and pushing hard with all the other athletes. It is inspiring to be part of this group. Each day we push to be even a tiny bit better than the day before. I may not always want to come in as there are always excuses (I’m tired, it’s too late, too stressed etc) but I try to make time each day for me and getting to workout with my friends always puts a smile on my face.
