TW would like to congratulate our March 2025 Athlete of the Month… Julie Farrer! Way to go Julie!
Anyone who knows Julie knows the incredible energy she brings into the gym. It’s light, fun, silly, witty and she often says what we are all thinking in the best way. In her time at TW, Julie has shown incredible resilience, dedication and work ethic. She is strong, she is determined, she has built an incredible routine and become such a staple in our community. You can always count on Julie to make you laugh or to laugh at your jokes (even the coaches cheesy ones!) She is just a bright light that makes every class that much better. We are so proud of you Julie and are lucky to have an amazing human such as yourself as a part of our community! Stay cool beans!
TW: Where are you from?
Julie: I grew up in Milford, MA but I’ve been living in the Boston area since college.
TW: What do you do for work?
Julie: I‘m an architect by training and I manage the design and construction of real estate development projects.
TW: How long have you been at Tradewinds?
Julie: 2 years this April!
TW: What motivated you to try Tradewinds?
Julie: After moving to Beachmont, I walked by the gym while out with my dog so I pulled up the TW Instagram account. As someone who did CrossFit for a long time, the images looked similarly focused on functional fitness so I figured I’d give it a try.
TW: What group class do you usually attend?
Julie: Lately due to my funemployment, I frequent the 11:30am class. When I go back to working it’ll likely be 5pm or 6:15pm.
TW: Did you have a fitness background prior to starting at Tradewinds?
Julie: I grew up as an indoor kid but discovered running in grad school where I accomplished a life goal of completing a marathon. It wasn’t until I moved to Medford that I tried my first CrossFit class and I was a member of a Somerville CrossFit gym for 7 years before moving to Revere.
TW: If you could program your dream WOD, what would it be?
Julie: A barbell complex with some running or jump rope mixed in.
TW: What would your dream meal be?
Julie: Tacos and margaritas.
TW: What is your proudest accomplishment since joining Tradewinds?
Julie: Gaining a lot of the strength back that I lost during the deep days of Covid when going to the gym wasn’t possible.
TW: How has Tradewinds helped you in your everyday life?
Julie: Being strong is so important in all facets of life! Recently I had to shovel heavy, wet snow slop and I was grateful that my strength prevented me from injury. Also, I’m often on construction sites while working and being agile enough for climbing tons of stairs/ladders or walking on uneven ground is incredibly important for my own safety.
TW: What do you like to do outside the gym?
Julie: Anything beach related, anything dog related, drawing, looking at buildings, learning random facts a la ADHD.
TW: What is your favorite song to workout to?
Julie: the entirety of the “Songs for the Deaf” album by Queens of the Stone Age
TW: What’s one thing you’d tell someone who is curious about trying Tradewinds but not sure if they could do it?
Julie: You CAN do it. Everything is scalable! The first time I lifted weights I couldn’t get the 15# barbell over my head. We all have to start somewhere and witnessing your own progress is so self affirming.
AOM Closing thoughts…
I’ve never had a bad time at Tradewinds. I always feel 1,000x better after attending class, even if I complain the entire workout! It’s really nice to show up, chat with like-minded people and coaches, and not do anything but focus on movement for an hour. The coaches are all incredibly nice and approachable, as are the members. I think people can be really intimidated by joining a gym as it’s the unknown. But hey, you might even make a friend or two, and working out with people you like makes it even more enjoyable.
