The saying usually goes “work smarter not harder”, which makes sense in some scenarios but today I want to talk about how working harder can actually make you smarter!
Recent research has shown us that exercising at a challenging capacity is actually proven to have benefits for more than just our heart.
According to studies done by Harvard Medicine we have seen things as exciting as;
- increase in brain size
- improved long term memory
- better concentration
- increased attention to detail
We all want stronger bodies but what about stronger brains? The smarter we are the better off we are in life. Not to mention a better memory too. Wouldn’t it be awesome to remember all the good times you have with loved ones for a long time to come? And I can imagine everyone could use a little bit of help concentrating on the day to day tasks that can eat up a lot of our time and energy.
Imagine that? Imagine all you have to do is show up at the gym, push yourself and you’ll actually be a smarter person for a longer period of your life? That sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
Now, this can be challenging because it often means doing the things we might not want to do like challenging ourselves to intervals on the bike or hard efforts on the rower or maybe even challenging, explosive plyometric movements. But when we look at how great the rewards and benefits are to this type of training, it’s a no-brainer.
So next time you step into the gym for a hard workout, remember you aren’t just helping your heart, you’re helping your long term ability to stay sharp!
