Consistency Will Carry You

Right now is one of the most challenging times per year to put yourself first. Even coming out of the holiday season, there’s still a million reasons to find excuses not to prioritize yourself. When motivation is low, we have to rely on one thing, consistency.

Consistency is the one thing that will carry you through. It’s not likely that every day of your life you’re going to wake up motivated to do all of the things that you are supposed to do especially when it comes to your fitness. It is totally normal that you would have days where fitness is the last thing on your mind and getting your workout in seems like the impossible. The only thing that helps, is making it non-negotiable. On days where I want to find every excuse in the book to not do it, having that work out programmed into my calendar and knowing that there are other people relying on me to show up for myself is the one thing that keeps me going.

Just the other day I wasn’t able to workout at any of my normal times. It would have been so easy for me to use that as an excuse. It would have been easy to say “not today, I’ll just do it tomorrow.” But there was no real reason for me to do that. I found a different time block that worked and I pushed myself to get it done even though I truthfully didn’t want to. But guess what? I felt insanely proud afterwards knowing that I had kept that promise to myself. Knowing that on a daily basis I choose to show up for myself, doing the opposite has become the outlier for me, and that isn’t due to anything special about me personally aside from my commitment to consistency.

Consistency is the one thing that we can lean on day in and day out to take care of those times where life tries to get in the way. Setting your schedule and sticking to it will bring you more power and happiness over your life than you could ever imagine. Having those daily wins of showing up for yourself stack up and end up paying off tenfold in the long run. I know it can be hard to see that now when you’re in the thick of it and struggling to get into that routine, but all you can do is try.

So where do you start? Start with deciding what you can do right now today and commit to sticking with. Let’s say that’s three times per week working out at 7 AM. Awesome, let’s put that in our calendar. Let’s tell our loved ones that we are committed to that. And let’s show up even when it gets hard. Don’t overthink it, just do it.

The more wins you accumulate the easier it will be to show up for yourself and to keep showing up for yourself for a long time to come. There is nothing stopping you from starting right now- today, besides you. Don’t be what gets in the way of you and your success. Be the person who picks themself up and charges ahead full force with one goal in mind, showing up for yourself so that you can be the best version of you.
