I’ll be honest, this time of year always tests my motivation a little. When it’s dark when I wake up and before dinner, I have that split-second thought of “Maybe I’ll just skip today.” Sound familiar?
But every time I push through and get moving, I feel instantly better, more awake, less sluggish, and more like myself again. That’s exactly why this season, even though it’s cozy-sweater weather, is the time we need movement the most. It’s not just about staying fit, it’s about keeping our energy and our mindset strong through the darker days.
Here are a few things that help me stay energized as the season gets a bit darker.
1. Start the Morning with Light and Movement
One thing that’s helped me is creating a “wake-up ritual.” I open the blinds right away (even if it’s barely light out) and do a quick five-minute stretch or mobility flow. It signals to my body that the day has started, even when it still feels like night outside. If mornings are hard for you, try it, you’ll be surprised how much better you feel once you get your blood flowing.
2. Keep Your Routine, Even When It’s Hard
When it’s dark and cold, it’s so easy to talk ourselves out of our normal schedule. But keeping your class or training time consistent is key. I’ve found that once I show up, whether I’m teaching, training, or just working out beside everyone else, my whole mindset shifts. It’s always harder in your head than it is once you’re there. You never regret showing up.
3. Lean on the Community Around You
This is honestly my favorite part of being at the studio. There’s something about walking in, seeing familiar faces, and knowing we’re all choosing to show up, even when it’s not easy, that makes a huge difference. If you’ve been feeling stuck or unmotivated lately, reach out. Join a class, bring a friend, or check out one of our upcoming events. Accountability and connection are powerful motivators.
4. Focus on Energy, Not Perfection
Some weeks, I’m crushing my workouts and eating balanced meals. Other weeks, I’m just proud I showed up and moved my body for 60 minutes. Both count. Progress isn’t about perfection—it’s about momentum. Think about how movement makes you feel, more alive, centered, and capable. That’s what matters most, especially now.
5. Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To
Set a small goal for November, something realistic that keeps you motivated. Maybe it’s hitting three workouts a week, running your first 5K, or mastering that one tough exercise in class. I like to pick a goal that feels exciting but doable, so it gives me that little spark to stay consistent through the busy holiday season.
As we roll into the shorter, darker days, remember this: movement is your light. It keeps your energy up, your mood balanced, and your body strong—physically and mentally. So don’t let the darkness win. Let’s keep showing up, together.
