Big Box Gym vs. CrossFit Gym

There are many differences between a “Big Box” “Globo-Gym” membership and what you get with a CrossFit membership. Most people have the same view of gym memberships, “I would love to workout more, but I don’t know how and I don’t have the time.” This is why a membership to a “globo-gym” is so appealing, it’s cheap, at around $10-$75/month, so people aren’t afraid if they don’t use it. “Well it’s only $10”, everyone says, we’ve all been there. That is until you look at what each membership actually gets you.

Sure the “globo-gym” membership is cheap, and it does give you access to this huge facility with all these fancy machines. The problem is most people do not know how to use them correctly. They are intimidated by most of the machines, especially the free weights, and therefore gravitate towards the  cardio machines. I mean after all a treadmill or stationary bike seem pretty easy to use. Most people also go to the gym alone, which makes it very difficult to stay motivated. This means that most people drop off of the gym after the first few weeks, furthermore when they are there they’re only on the cardio machines for about 15 mins, before deciding to go home.  They create this habit of doing things that are easy and not complicated.  It can be extremely challenging and seem almost impossible to achieve long term results when you are only doing the things that seem easy and not pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone.

Now let’s look at a CrossFit gym membership. Sure it is more expensive, ranging anywhere from $150-$300 a month, depending on location and amenities. However the first big difference is that CrossFit gyms offer small group classes. What does this mean? Well it means that each class is run by a instructor, most of the time these classes have a ratio of 1 coach to every 10-15 athletes. This coach leads the class through a warm up, sometimes stretching, instructs them on movements, and coaches them through a workout. This means that you no longer need to try and figure out what workout to do, or how to properly warm-up, or how to work a piece of equipment. At a CrossFit gym those complicated steps are taken care of for you. There is actually another similar service that offers these same perks, personal training. Personal training however is even more expensive! Typical personal training rates vary between $50-$100 for a 1 hour session! If someone does personal training 3 days a week, which is typically what’s recommended to achieve maximum results, that’s about $600 a month on the low end, in addition to usually having to pay for a membership to the facility that hosts the trainer! That is more than double a typical CrossFit membership, which offers similar services, plus a vast array of additional benefits.

The next thing that a CrossFit gym offers is a community of like minded people who may have similar goals. It is always easier to to do something when you do it with other people. Having a community holds you accountable. It motivates you to work harder towards your goals. It keeps you motivated to come back. Now that doesn’t mean that you’re trying to compete and beat the person working out next to you, what it means is that there will always be people there to motivate you, support you, and cheer you on. Overtime you build bonds with other members who will also motivate you to attend classes together, helping to keep you motivated and keep coming in.

The other important element that a CrossFit membership offers is the availability of additional information. Have a question about nutrition? Looking for advice on a nutrition plan? Working through an injury and need feedback and advice on recovery? Looking to reach specific goals such as losing weight, building strength, or just looking for the best way to get in shape? At a CrossFit gym you have direct access to coaches with an abundance of knowledge and resources ready to be shared. As a CrossFit coach it is our job to be educated in a wide array of fitness and wellness topics. Your coach should be able to help answer any questions you have, or at the very least direct you to someone who does.
