March 2018 – Athlete of the Month

March’s Athlete of the Month is Nate O!
Nate, our resident Canadian, is one of our #morningmayhem athletes, and his friendship with the rest of the “morning bromance” is a prime example of the camaraderie that comes naturally among CrossFit athletes in general, and Tradewinds athletes in particular. Check out our interview with the man of the month. Take it away, Nate!

CFT: Where are you from?
Nate: Toronto, Canada.

CFT: How long have you been doing CrossFit?
Nate: I started CrossFit in April of 2017, so ~10 months.

CFT: Did you have a fitness background prior to starting CrossFit?
Nate: As a typical Canadian, I played a lot of hockey growing up. More recently, I practiced Taekwondo for a few years, ran a marathon, multiple half marathons and some other random distance running. The theme of the last 10 years is that I’ve been anything but consistent.

CFT: What motivated you to try CrossFit?
Nate: For me, the most difficult thing about working out is deciding what to do at the gym every day. I thought (correctly) that CrossFit would solve this issue.

CFT: If you could program your dream WOD, what would it be?
Nate: I love rowing so any WOD with rowing in it, I’m game.

CFT: What is your proudest accomplishment since joining CFT?
Nate: Every month since I joined CrossFit, I’d give a different answer. From my first kipping pull-up, to dubs, to T2B, etc. Since we just did 18.1, my proudest accomplishment is being able to RX an open workout.

CFT: How has CFT helped you in your everyday life?
Nate: Before CrossFit, I would stay up late, and be tired at work the next day. Now I fall asleep at 8pm, workout at 5:30 or 6am, and I’m tired at work the next day… I kid. I now have so much more energy for regular every day things, and I know so much more about what my body can do.

CFT: What do you like to do outside of the gym?
Nate: I spend quite a bit of time working on projects around the house. Building furniture, renovating different areas of the house (whatever area my wife chooses), and sometimes building random Christmas decorations.

CFT: What is your favorite song to workout to?
Nate: Although I love/hate burpee Sally, I do always like hearing Moby while I work out.

CFT: What more can you tell us about your experience as a CFT athlete?
Nate: My biggest hesitation when deciding whether or not to join CrossFit was the standard intimidation factor. I was worried that I would walk in to the gym and everyone would look down on me for not being able to do all of the workouts, or for not being strong enough to handle the RX weights. I couldn’t have been more surprised with what I have experienced as an athlete at CFT. I have never met a group of people who are this motivational, supportive and nice. I come to the gym every weekday morning not only to get a good workout, but also to hang out with my friends. The challenges I’ve been able to conquer at CrossFit have only been possible with their help and support.

Thanks, Nate! Congratulations!
